About Our Troop

Troop 228 is part of the Dutchess District of the Hudson Valley Council. We are chartered to the Northern Dutchess Rod and Gun Club, located at 140 Enterprise Road, Rhinebeck, New York.

We currently hold troop meetings every Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. Troop 228 follows the slogan "no school, no Scouts". This means that if the Rhinebeck Central School District is closed or dismissed early due to weather, the Troop meeting is also cancelled. If the weather gets bad after school hours, the Scoutmaster makes a decision, and all Troop members are notified by phone and the website.

Activities

Besides regular weekly troop meetings, Troop 228 has at least one outing each month which include, but are not limited to, overnight camping, day hikes, canoeing, biking, backpacking, etc. We attend summer camp for one week in the summer and plan a high adventure activity for qualifying scouts. We plan special trips which have included an overnight trip to Battleship Cove where the scouts spent the night in the crew quarters of the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, a weekend trip to Boston where scouts walked the historic Freedom Trail, visited the U.S.S. Constitution, and learned about our nation’s fight for independence, and a trip to the Pequot Museum and Mystic Seaport. We have attended various camporees and have attended the Jamboree in Virginia.

Community Service

Troop 228 is involved in community efforts in and around Rhinebeck. This is a vital part of the Scouting program and the troop depends on scouts and parents to “pitch in”. Community service activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Scouting for Food
  • Rhinebeck Memorial Day parade and ceremonies
  • Caroling during the holidays at local nursing homes
  • Working on Eagle Scout projects – scouts will have opportunities to assist fellow scouts who are working on earning the rank of Eagle.
  • Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club’s exhibit at the Dutchess County Fair. In recent years this has included demonstrating how to build a dugout canoe by hand, and how to build camp furniture and equipment using logs and rope lashings.
  • Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club’s annual Open House as a way of repaying them for the generous support.

All boys that join our troop are given a copy of The Scout Handbook and a subscription to Boys Life, a scouting magazine. Boys will need to purchase a Scout uniform shirt and neckerchief.
