Camp Squanto

  • Sunday, July 4 -- Saturday, July 10, 2010

The boy leaders of the Troop 228 Troop Leadership Council (TLC) have decided, with the support of the Troop’s adult leadership, that they’d like to attend summer camp this year at Camp Squanto near Plymouth, Massachusetts.  The Troop spent two consecutive summer camping seasons at Camp Squanto, in the summers of 2004 and 2005, and had a great experience there each of those years.

Please follow "Read more" link on the right (under logo) for more information.

Camp Squanto is owned and run by the Old Colony Council, BSA, in Canton, MA.  In terms of facilities and programs, the camp is one of the top Boy Scout camps in the Northeast.  Our Scouts who camped there in the past had an outstanding experience. Please note that Squanto
provides a full range of outdoor activities for new scouts as well as for advancing scouts, including some unique merit badges, such as golf and oceanography, that most camps do not offer.

We are planning to attend Camp Squanto from Sunday, July 4th through Saturday, July 10th.  Please note that this is earlier in the summer than our Troop typically attends summer camp. The change is due to the fact that our TLC wanted to go to Squanto this year and the camp is not running a session when we usually go to summer camp in the second week of August.  You can get an advance look at Camp Squanto’s facilities and programs by logging on to their website at www.campsquanto.net.  Of course, we will be providing you with more details in the coming months.

At this time, it is critical for us to get an accurate count of the registered scouts and registered adult scouters who would be interested in attending Camp Squanto with Troop 228 this summer as soon as possible in order to reserve a place for us.  Given Squanto’s popularity, the summer camping season at the camp is already getting well booked.  While there is some space currently available during Week #2 (July 4-10, 2010), our concern is that this remaining space will go quickly.

The total cost to attend camp with Troop 228 scouts this coming summer is $325 per Scout.  The camp fee is $305 and we will need to add an additional $20 fee to cover round-trip car transportation to and from camp.  (The total fee for each registered adult leader is $100.)  These fees are all-inclusive and cover camp registration and program, three dining hall meals each day at camp, and automobile transportation to and from camp.  Meals on the way to and from camp, as well as the fee for a camp photograph, if desired, are the responsibility of each scout.

To reserve your son a place at Camp Squanto with Troop 228 during Week #2 this coming summer, we will need two things from you:

1.    An e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or a telephone call (845/266-3851), informing me that you are planning to have your son attend Camp Squanto with Troop 228 from July 4-10, 2010.

2.    A deposit of $100 per camper by check made out to “Troop 228 BSA,” no later than the troop meeting on Monday, April 5, 2010.  Please note that this deposit applies to both registered scouts and adults, and is non-refundable, although it can be transferred to a
new camper.

In order for us to reserve our spot at Camp Squanto, meet the Camp’s payment deadlines, and distribute the payments for parents, we have established the following suggested summer camp payment schedule for each scout:

Monday, April 5, 2010                       $100 non-refundable deposit is due

Monday, April 26, 2010                     $125 non-refundable camp fee payment is due

Monday, May 10, 2010                      $100 non-refundable camp fee balance is due

If a different payment schedule better suits your family, please let me know.  However, I do need a deposit by April 5th and the fee balance by May 10.  Please note that the camp charges a $25 late fee in the event that a scout’s full payment is received from the Troop after May 15.  Parents who will need financial assistance to send their scout to summer camp should contact Alan Halstead, Scoutmaster, or me as soon as possible.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me in person, by telephone (845/266-3851) or by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

PS -  In order to help you get a jump on the 2010 summer camp routine, please be aware that all scouts, and all leaders under 40 years of age, must have a medical exam performed by a physician within 24 months of the camp arrival date (July 4, 2010).  In addition, the medical form must be reviewed and revised by the physician every 12 months. Therefore, the medical form must be signed and dated by a physician within 12 months but you need only to have had a physical exam within 24 months of arrival at camp.    Because it is sometimes difficult to schedule appointments with physicians for medical exams and follow-ups, I am bringing this to your attention now, especially to the parents of new scouts, so that you can plan accordingly.  I will need your completed form by mid-June.  Camp Squanto will not allow a scout or a scout leader to attend summer camp without meeting this physical examination and review requirements.

I have attached a copy of the form here. You can also find the Boy Scouts of America Annual Health and Medical Record form, which must be used for summer camp, at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34605_Letter.pdf or under forms in the Troop 228 web site.
